Building a scalable visual language with AI

Context
AI made it possible to produce illustrations at a completely different scale. It also made it much harder to keep them recognizably Welltory.
I developed the visual direction, then turned it into a system of reusable metaphors, emotional states, color rules, and composition principles — creating a framework that could scale across formats without losing the brand.
Welltory turns health data into infographics and visual metaphors that help people understand their current state and explore how their lifestyle affects it.
The illustration system is built around the product’s core metaphor:
health as a living ecosystem
The first step was defining what a Welltory illustration should communicate.
I developed a visual direction around the idea of health as a living ecosystem — something dynamic, interconnected, and constantly changing rather than a collection of isolated metrics.
Then AI changed the scale — and the problem
As Midjourney and Nano Banana became part of the workflow, producing illustrations got faster. Keeping them coherent got harder.
Individual images could look good while gradually drifting apart in style, symbolism, and meaning. The challenge was no longer generating an illustration. It was creating a visual language that could survive generation at scale.
So I started turning the art direction into a system.
I separated what an illustration says from how it feels. Metaphors carry the idea. Color carries the state.
I mapped Welltory’s brand palette to recurring physiological and emotional states, giving AI generation a consistent logic beyond simply matching a visual style.
I tested the system in real content, refined the visual rules, and built a reusable metaphor library around the themes Welltory talks about most often.

Balance, regulation, and returning to the body.

Deep sleep, deep rest, safety, and nervous system recovery.
Reset
Gentle recovery, emotional relief, and a fresh start.
A visual system that scaled beyond me
The system turned a personal art direction into a shared production language. Other designers could use it, AI could accelerate it, and new illustrations no longer had to start from scratch. Today, the visual language runs across product, CRM, web, editorial, and social — adapting to new topics and formats while remaining recognizably Welltory.
